Today: Girl Scout Cookie Truck & Recipes

It’s that time of the year again–National Girl Scout Cookie Day! In honor of the holiday, the Girl Scout Cookie Truck will be making its way through New York City this morning and afternoon. Come rain, shine, or mounds and mounds of snow, the girls will be there, under the protection of tents, selling what are easily the most addictive treats on the market. There are three locations where you can find your favorite cookies, from samoas to trefoils, tagalongs to thin mints.

  • 8:30-10:30am, 42nd Street & Madison Avenue
  • 11:30am-1:30pm, 57th Street between Fifth Avenue & Sixth Avenue
  • 2:30-4:30 pm, Park Avenue between 52nd Street & 53rd Street

For families a bit less courageous than the girls in brown and green spending the day outside, have no fear. We have the original 1922 recipe, so you can can still enjoy the cookie fun right at home in chunky sweaters and fuzzy slippers.

Girl Scout Cookie, circa 1922

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar, plus additional for topping as desired
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cream butter and the cup of sugar. Add well-beaten eggs, then milk, vanilla, flour, salt, and baking powder. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Roll dough, cut into trefoil shapes, and sprinkle sugar on top (optional).

Bake for approximately 8-10 minutes or until the edges begin to brown. Makes six to seven dozen cookies.

Still hungry? There’s more!

We also love these brilliant copycat recipes from Chow.com, which includes a whole list of Girl Scout cookies you can make on your own. The best part? These recipes are healthier alternatives to the sugary classics. Here are some of our favorites:

Slim Mints
Want to sink your teeth into some homemade thin mints without taking in all the calories? Slim Mints are your answer. Warning: this recipe is not for the impatient. Total active cooking time is a couple of hours. Hey, it takes time to make something this delicious!

Fijis
More of a coconut family? This cookie boosts to be way more in touch with the South Pacific islands than its Girl Scout cookie inspiration, the Samoa. Again, this recipe will set you back a few hours but, again, we think you won’t regret it.
