On Sept. 3, Monsignor McClancy Memorial High School, a Catholic high school administered by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart of the New York Province, announced the appointment of new president Nicholas Melito, the current assistant to the president and admissions and facility director. Melito will take over for current president Brother Joseph Rocco on July 1, 2020, just before the 2020-2021 academic year. The East Elmhurst school has a strong academic curriculum with numerous opportunities for students in religious studies, athletics, and college and career preparation.
The school boasts a hundred percent college acceptance rate. Graduates have gone on to attend laudable institutions, such as Johns Hopkins University, New York University and American University. They’ve also, like Melito, returned once more to the school.
Melito says he is a proud 1976 graduate of Msgr. McClancy Memorial High School. In 1988, he joined the school first as a teacher of global studies and as then head coach of the varsity baseball team in 2000. He eventually transitioned into a more administrative role as assistant to the president in 2006. Since first taking on this position, he has also become the admissions and facility director.
“I love the school,” says Melito. “The Brothers of the Sacred Heart have had such an influence in my life.”
Melito says he expects the transition into his new role as president to be seamless. He and Brother Rocco will be working together this year to ensure he is well equipped. In addition to transitional work, Melito plans to continue to focus on his two current roles as he oversees the replacement of a heating and air conditioning system in the school's student center, as well as the installment of new scoreboards in the gym.
“It sounds cliché, but we are a team,” says Melito. “I look forward to taking another seat on the team.”
