This fall, personal trainer Janet Perry opened Weight For It Fitness, a mobile gym created to accommodate individuals of all needs and abilities. Perry, who has been weight training for more than 40 years, says that after becoming a personal trainer for people with special needs, she realized how difficult it could be for many of her clients to enter a gym due to social anxiety or sensory issues. This inspired Weight For It, a bus that enables her to bring the gym to her clients.
Perry says she hopes that her fitness business enables people to feel comfortable using weight machines and getting the work out that they need. She also says she is able to help individuals with special needs who want to work out but may struggle if they don't have the strongest muscle tone. By providing them with a comfortable and encouraging environment, she works to help them achieve their fitness goals.
The bus contains a chest and leg press, leg extension and curl machine, dumbbells, balance boards, a rower, a trampoline, and more.
Perry says she believes that everybody, regardless of labels, has a special need and she wants people to not feel like they've been labeled.
“I don't have a 'special needs' name attached to my gym because Weight For It Fitness is for all people and all ability levels,” says Perry. “There are a lot of people that can't leave their home if they don't drive, or they might have social anxiety or depression and don't feel comfortable in a gym. So I come to them.”
