Long Island Parent magazine, a monthly title published by NYMetroParents and Davler Media Group, took home three awards at The Press Club of Long Island’s 2014 Media Awards dinner on June 5 at the Woodbury Country Club.
The Press Club of Long Island is a local chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, the nation’s largest and most broad-based journalism organization that is dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior. The Long Island chapter announced winners in more than 80 categories at this year’s banquet.
Long Island Parent received third-place awards for the following articles:
Narrative Home & Garden Category
The Gateway Park Community Organic Garden in the heart of Huntington Station is a multi-generational, multi-ethnic community project that brings the area’s residents together and teaches children to garden, exposing them to fresh, locally grown produce.
Curvy Girls, a network of scoliosis support groups, empowers girls who have scoliosis from Long Island to Australia. The groups, founded by a Long Island-based mother-daughter duo, offers support and information for both girls and parents.
Narrative Non-Local News/Feature
Keeping Children Safe from Sexual Abuse
It’s a topic no parent wants to even think about. But not talking to our kids about appropriate vs. inappropriate touching is irresponsible. Learn how and when to talk to your children about sexual abuse, and how to handle suspected abuse.
All three articles were written by Liza Burby, former publisher of Long Island Parent and a senior adjunct professor of communications at Adelphi University in Garden City.
