The Long Island City YMCA is rolling out different themes for each of its day camp session for children ages 5-14 this summer.
The Long Island City YMCA's summer camps used have one theme per summer, but this year each two-week session will have its own, which will be incorporated into activities such as sports, arts, swimming, academics, and field trips.
“How they [children] walk in is different than how we want them to walk out,” says Julia DeFeo, the youth and family director at the Long Island City YMCA. “We want to develop their minds whether it is intellectually, emotionally, or socially over the summer.”
The first session, July 3-14, will have an Olympic theme and involve learning Olympic Games from all over the world, which will incorporate team building. The second session, July 17-28, will have a rolling out the red carpet theme, which will encourage campers to identify role models who inspire them. The third session, July 31-Aug. 11, will explore entertainment, science, and fashion throughout the years. The final session, Aug. 14-25, will have a circus theme and will end with a huge carnival that the whole family can enjoy.
The day camp will run from 9am-5pm with extended hours from 7:30-9am and 5-6pm. The Long Island City YMCA's summer camps for kids incorporate a wide range of activities including sports such as baseball and kickball as well as art, culture, swimming, field trips, and academics.
