LIU Post Youth Camp is adding cheerleading to its summer camp offerings. The Long Island cheerleading summer camp will be taught by LIU Post cheerleaders.
This summer, the LIU Post Youth Camp will offer cheerleading, as the day camp enters its 20th season.
Camp program director Nickolette Kacharaba thought it was time to introduce cheerleading as a camp option when she noticed how popular the sport had become during a cheerleading competition held at LIU Post. With horseback riding, performing arts, sports, drama, and more already offered at the camp, Kacharaba says it is a great way for kids to figure out what they might want to pursue in the future. “We want kids to get an experience of everything because when they’re young, they don’t know what they necessarily like until they try things,” she says.
LIU Post’s cheerleaders and coach will lead the two-week program. Kids ages 5-14 will learn how to do standard jumps, tumbles, and different cheers, and will be separated into three groups. The 5- to 7-year-old group will meet for 45 minutes ($100), the 8- to 10-year-old group for 1 hour ($150), and the 11- to 14-year-old group for 1½-2 hours ($200).
Another addition to this year’s summer camp is the ability to choose to join clubs focused on a specific topic in the afternoons. For example, kids can join sports clubs, in which they will play baseball, softball, basketball, and volleyball. Or, if they join the art club, they can learn ceramics and clay pottery.
