Kid-Friendly Picnic Blankets

Last summer the grass was always greener when I was on someone else’s picnic blanket. I always carried a blanket in the basket of our stroller so we’d be ready for a picnic on a moment’s notice, but unfortunately, I struck out with all the options I tried: a heavy, unwieldy woven blanket with no waterproof lining; a water repellent “sheet” that pilled and collected debris; and a too-warm stadium blanket that slid around on its nylon lining. This summer I resolved to find the perfect, kid-friendly picnic blanket.— Here are the top 10 contenders (from least to most expensive):

Zip & Carry Picnic Blanket. This brightly colored, lightweight blanket from Target is super-affordable and zips into its own rectangular tote with a handle for easy transport. ($19.99)

JJ Cole Essentials Blanket. Its waterproof backing makes this blanket a popular choice. You can fold it into a messenger bag for travel or storage using the sturdy insert that’s sewn in. ($29.99)

Turkish Bath Towels from Indigo Traders. These classic lightweight towels are spun from 100% Turkish cotton and are perfect for impromptu picnics. As a ground cover, they probably work best on dry grass, but they could also be draped over a stroller to double as sun protection. Check out the “warm" and "cool" collections for fun summer colors. Grand Trunk Double Parasheet by L.L Bean. Made from fabric that stays cool on even the hottest days, this massive nylon parachute is perfect for the beach or the park. It can be tethered at the corners with stakes or by filling the corner pockets with sand or stones. When it’s time to go, simply stuff the blanket into its accompanying pouch. ($39.95)

Picnic Mega Mat from Fresh Picnic. With its waterproof backing and soft acrylic top, this blanket is similar to the JJ Cole Essentials, only bigger. It has an 8” x 8” pocket to hold keys/wallet and comes in summery prints like “Very Berry” and “Citrus Stripe.” ($42)

Green Stripe Picnic Blanket by Crate & Barrel. The broad green stripes on this blanket scream summer! With a water-resistant, PVC-coated backing, it provides protection from damp grass and can be rolled up and bound with a separate carrying strap. ($44.95)

Central Park Blanket by Skip Hop. Eco-conscious parents will appreciate that the water-resistant lining on this blanket is PVC-, BPA- and Phthalate- free. It zips into a bag that can be carried as a backpack, shoulder bag or messenger bag, and it includes a detachable cooler bag for drinks and snacks. ($45)

Zip-N-Go. The eco-friendly fleece on this well-designed blanket is made from recycled materials. It also has a waterproof lining and zips into a chic tote. ($59)

Pendleton Roll-Up Blanket. There’s nothing more all-American than this classic tartan plaid picnic blanket. Built-in handles allow for easy roll-up and transport, and the blanket’s underside is water-resistant nylon. Note the one drawback: it’s dry clean only. ($118)

Handmade Marimekko. This handmade Marimekko print blanket from Etsy shop SewnNatural is stunning. It’s quilted in three layers with a denim underside and collapses into a roll with carrying strap. No waterproof lining, but it’s eco-friendly. ($185)
