This weekend is all about the extremes, from larger-than-life LEGO animals to miniscule nanoparticles that are changing the landscape of science. Whether you love safari adventures, lab experiments, or a good old barbecue festival, NYC has got you covered. Need a break from the city? We have over 25 suggestions for great day trips, too.

FRIDAY-SUNDAY

Dinos Alive! Flying Monsters,” AMNH’s new National Geographic IMAX film, animates powerful pterosaurs bone by bone and explores just how these rulers of prehistoric skies once took flight.

Everyone’s favorite I-Spy character is coming to life in Story Nook’s month-long Where’s Waldo hunt. Use your eagle eyes to spot Waldo at 16 of the participating stores to claim prizes like book sets, music classes, and more.

SATURDAY

Only in New York can you conduct experiments, help build a boat, hang out with animals, and make your own instruments at a single place along the Hudson. Yep, it’s time for Science on the River again!

For more waterside festivities, hop aboard a Circle Line Kids’ Cruise to meet Berenstain Bears characters, jam along to the tunes of Danana Banana, and delight in the talents of a juggler, magician, and balloon artist.

Mini scientists won’t feel so little compared to the nanotechnology spotlighted at the Sony Wonder Technology Lab. Hands-on activities will help you learn how the small particles can make a big difference in science.

SATURDAY-SUNDAY

What’s better than a giant LEGO structure? An entire safari of giant LEGO structures, of course. Walk through LEGO tigers, flamingos, and more at the Bronx Zoo, then build your own animal and catch a hilarious musical puppet show.

If you didn’t have a proper BBQ on the 4th, Governors Island’s Cook Out NYC is offering over 20 grilling stations to satisfy–plus a custom beer tent for the grown-ups.

SUNDAY

Get ready for some wacky fun at SummerStage Kids’ Family Day in Central Park, where Justin Roberts and The Not Ready for Naptime Players are making a special appearance alongside the dance, crafts, and storytelling galore.

It’s all about flash and color at the Queens Museum of Art’s new Caribbean exhibit. Bonus: MetLife Second Sundays means free admission for opening weekend, plus a host of mask- and instrument-making workshops.

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Snowy Day by rocking out at this year’s Ezra Jack Keats Family Concert, featuring legendary a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock.

We spy a mysterious adventure during The Museum at Elridge Street’s Preservation Detectives program this weekend. Grab your binoculars, magnifying glasses, and other sleuthing tools to crack the secrets within the museum’s 125-year-old walls.

BONUS

Nothing spells summer like a festive getaway. Whether the kids are beach bums or camping enthusiasts, these 25-plus day trips are sure to please. What are you waiting for? The perfect hassle-free and super-quick family jaunt awaits.
