The Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band
Competition and Festival began 17 years ago with the goal of instilling a
broader understanding of Duke Ellington’s pivotal role in the jazz genre. After nearly two decades, this festival is still one of the biggest highlights of the year for jazz enthusiasts. The competition and festival culminates in a display of
musicianship and virtuosity by the top three high school jazz bands. These lucky winners get the chance of a lifetime to
perform on the historic Avery Fisher Stage.
