microscopes in science classHamden Hall Country Day School hosted Engineering is Elementary, a daylong development workshop for elementary school teachers, on May 7. Funded by a federal grant and organized in collaboration with the Boston Museum of Science, the day’s goal was to educate teachers on how to foster engineering and technology literacy among children.

Thirty elementary school teachers from across the state participated, enhancing their knowledge of engineering concepts and honing lesson plans and curriculums including science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The workshop is a facet of Hamden Hall’s recent push for science education. The school’s premier Science, Innovation & Design Initiative commences in the 2012-2013 school year. The program, which will feature collaborations with Duke University and Princeton University, is an interdisciplinary one that encourages highly motivated and intellectually curious students to excel as they develop a variety of skills.

“It’s clear that our future strongly hinges on innovative developments that will both advance the human condition and drive the 21st-century economy,” says Frank Gasparro, Ph.D., a Hamden Hall Upper School science teacher who serves as co-chair of the Steering Committee for the new initiative. “It is also clear that…the way work gets done and the skills needed to complete tasks are shifting dramatically. It is with these thoughts that Hamden Hall is establishing the Hamden Hall Center for Science Innovation and Design.”
