Spike Lee might be an Academy Award-nominated filmmaker, and
his wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, may have created an animated Disney series. But
first and foremost they’re parents. And they’ve teamed up for their third
children’s book, Giant Steps to Change the World—a colorfully
illustrated text that motivates kids to follow in the footsteps of the world’s
greatest historical change-makers. In their recent interview
with New York Family, Spike and Tonya said they hope the book makes
history more engaging for kids while dually encouraging them not to give up on
their aspirations. —
Each pair of pages alludes to a different historical figure
(like Harriet Tubman, Einstein and Mother Teresa), their accomplishments and
setbacks and how that pioneer can inspire! While the leaders in question aren’t
named, history-savvy kids might have fun guessing at the more familiar depictions.
And some of the dreamlike illustrations by Sean Qualls may give extra hints.
Inspirational quotes dotting the inside covers identify the chosen figures,
offering a great starting point for teaching moments (but you don’t have to
call them that, of course!)
We have five copies of Giant
