Who knew that Ed Koch was writing children’s books? We were pleasantly surprised to hear that the former mayor has penned an autobiographical picture book–published by Tim Zagat of the Zagat Restaurant Surveys and with an introduction by Bill Clinton–based on his experiences growing up as a “chubby child.” —
Eddie Shapes Up written by Koch and his sister, Pat Koch Thaler, and illustrated by Jonathan Hoefer, is a delightful story of a thoughtful young boy who would rather put his nose in a book than play on the playground during recess. The reason for this preference (and his general reluctance to go out and play) isn’t immediately obvious, but readers soon learn that Eddie is self-conscious, finding himself not as athletically skilled as his peers. When he does join in on a game of dodge ball he is called “fatso” and “slowpoke” and, for reasons we all understand, refuses to stay in the game.
But as Eddie begins to change his ways and eventually prioritize his health, readers discover that he is much happier leading a life of eating well and exercising. The moral of the story is clear: taking care of yourself can be fun and will change the way you experience so many things–like a game at recess–for the better.
With childhood obesity on the rise, parents and teachers will appreciate the message within this story. What’s more, the beautiful illustrations and easy-to-relate main character make this a lighthearted yet poignant read.
