Looking for fun and low-cost family events this April in Westchester County, NY? Here are our editor’s top picks for the month, including live shows with colorful characters, outdoor events especially for kids, and one particularly wooly festival where you can welcome springtime.
April 12-15
Phineas and Ferb Go Live
Though Phineas and Ferb are famous for annoying their sister Candace with their grand plans, this may be their most impressive stunt yet: The brothers are going on a live tour, popping out of your television screen and landing squarely on stage in “Disney’s Phineas and Ferb: The Best Live Tour Ever!” As the brothers attempt to achieve an epic escape, the whole familiar cast of characters gets involved in their hijinks, including Candace, Perry the platypus (also known as Agent P in his secret double life), and evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz. The plot takes place during the magical hiatus of summer vacation—and as any child knows, that’s a time when truly anything can happen.
April 14-15
Welcome Spring
Marvel at the first green leaves of the season and use them for inspiration in Go Wild Garden, a family art project at Wave Hill Public Garden and Cultural Center in the Bronx.
April 15
Making Creative Connections
Artist John Ashford’s style is defined by his detailed, life-like technique and use of color and theme. On April 15, Ashford leads a Creative Connections Leather Art-Making Workshop at the Hudson River Museum, inspired by featured African-American artist Winfred Rembert. Visitors will make their own leather collages in this hands-on program. For families with children ages 5 and older.
April 21
Grumpy Goats and Mischievous Monkeys
The Hudson Vagabond Puppets present two classic tales this month featuring their signature brand of larger-than-life puppetry. Using traditional techniques from around the world, the puppeteers magically become mere shadows of the enormous figures they bring to life. On April 21, the group will present a double-bill of “The Three Billy Goats Gruff” (pictured) and “Caps for Sale.“
April 22
Celebrate Earth Day
Greenburgh Nature Center’s Earth Day Celebration is a fun, earth-friendly afternoon. All ages can help spruce up the grounds, prepare the garden beds, and clear the trails. Participate in The Children & Nature Network’s Let’s G.O.! (Get Outside) initiative to get intergenerational groups outside together. A free visit to the Animal Museum is included for all Earth Day volunteers.

Wooly Bully!
Celebrate spring at Stone Barns’ annual Sheep Shearing Festival, one of the most popular days on the farm all year. Watch and ask questions as the farmers shear wool from Stone Barns’ flock of Finn-Dorset sheep. Enjoy family-friendly wool and weaving activities all day long: visit sheep and wool education stations, watch spinners at work, learn to comb and card wool, and experiment at the mini-loom and felting stations. Join farmers for tours of the farm and demonstrations like egg collecting, pig feeding, and planting seedlings in the field. Sample a variety of sheep’s milk cheese and yogurt. Artisanal lunch items and treats will be available for cash purchase from local vendors in the farmers’ market.
