A funny thing happened in the last week and a half of work: I pulled two all-nighters, as if I were 19 again and faced with no alternatives. Who knows? Thankfully, I have a wonderful Deputy Editor to lead us into this jam-packed issue. –Eric Messinger, Editor, [email protected]

Our final issue of the year is always a treat because it shines a spotlight on so much of what makes the city a wonderful place to live and raise a family. As you peruse our holiday fun coverage and our annual Charities We Love feature, it’s easy to be thankful for the wonderful city we live in—a place full of opportunities for joy and celebration and family fun, but also full of individuals and organizations doing selfless work on behalf of children and families all year long.

Of course: It wouldn’t be a holiday magazine without gift guides galore! Our annual toy guide and gift guide for parents are two projects that I look forward to all year long. Our toy guide offers something for all ages and has as many educational picks as it does ones that are pure fun. And because we believe all of our readers belong on the nice list, we’ve put together a parent gift guide that gives full permission to indulge in some naughty spending this season (because after all those preschool applications and all that potty training, you deserve that artisan whiskey-flavored chocolate bar and that whimsically impractical clutch purse!).

Finally, as we prepare to wrap up 2016, we’re also excited to look forward to a fresh new year and are pleased to present a roundup of inspiring innovations in local education, a comprehensive guide to swoon-worthy and family-friendly real estate, and a very fun look into the life of one of the coolest NYC moms we know, noted doula Latham Thomas, as she balances her amazing wellness work with raising her equally cool son, DJ Fulano.

Happy Holidays,
Mia Weber
