NYC Public School Students’ Art Work Displayed at The Met

The Metropolitan Museum of Art will display works of art from 90 public school students from across the five boroughs of New York City.

This summer, The Metropolitan Museum of Art welcomes its ninth annual display of P.S. Art 2016: Celebrating the Creative Spirit of NYC Kids, an exhibition of works of art by public school students in New York City’s five boroughs.

The Met Fifth Avenue will celebrate the young artists with an opening ceremony for students, parents, and teachers on Tuesday, June 14 at 5pm. Speakers include dignitaries from New York City Department of Education, Studio in a School, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. After the ceremony, the exhibition will be open for the public. Along with display at the museum, The Met will choose certain works of art to be displayed on outdoor digital screens in Times Square from June 22-26, courtesy of the Times Square Advertising Coalition

P.S. Art 2016 presents the work of public school students from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade. The 89 works made by 90 students were chosen from 1,205 submissions citywide, and final decisions were made by a jury comprised of distinguished members of the art community. The works demonstrate how creativity, artistic ability, and subject matter change from childhood to adulthood. Students participating in advanced-placement art classes are represented, along with students with special needs.

“It’s always rewarding to present the work of our city’s talented young artists. These students are at the perfect age to discover their creativity through The Met, and we hope they continue to enjoy the museum throughout their lives,” said Thomas P. Campbell, director and CEO of the Met, according to a press release from the museum.

P.S. Art 2016: Celebrating the Creative Spirit of NYC Kids is one of the many ways the museum aims to bolster creativity and education of New York City students. Annually, more than 2,300 New York City public school teachers and administrators participate in workshops at The Met, and the museum provides free visits to more than 77,000 students.

The works in the exhibition can also be viewed at metmuseum.org, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter with the hashtag #PSArt2016.
