On Sunday, July 31, 11-year-old Aaron Perl and his father, Mitch, will swim one mile down the Hudson River
to benefit AHRC Nassau. This very special “Mitzvah on the Hudson” fundraising event has been inspired by Ally Witt, a 13-year-old who has raised nearly
$6,000 to benefit AHRC’s respite services–where her uncle resides. —
AHRC provides opportunities for more than 2,200
people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities, while offering residential,
supportive employment and pre-vocational programs, community habilitation, guardianship and family
support services. AHRC Nassau’s respite services also provide emergency placement, a summer sleep-away camp in upstate New York and a Saturday recreation program for its members. As growing adults continue to be cared for at home
by their aging parents and families, respite services are crucial to the community, and they are in need of support.
The “Mitzvah on the Hudson” benefit for AHRC was conceived of by young Aaron who overcame his own physical disability having been born with a congenital short femur that required surgery when he was 6 years old. Today, Aaron likes to compete in triathlons alongside his
father. And on Sunday, “Mitzvah on the Hudson” will begin at 1pm at 99th Street and will finish at the 79th Street Boat Basin. A post-swim reception
will be held at the Boat Basin Café. Sponsorship opportunities are available. For
