A Room Of His Own

It was more than a month ago when I shared this post showcasing my then-unborn son’s disaster area of a nursery. Well I’m happy to report that we finished the room on my due date, we met our son Sam a little over a week later, and the nursery has been serving us well in the seven weeks since he showed up.— Here’s a little bit about each element of the room:

The wall shelves are from Ikea (I didn’t expect to find them in red, I was thrilled!). I loved going through all the books, toys and other things we’d been given and deciding what to put on the shelves. The alphabet nesting blocks and the wooden stacking rings are both from Melissa & Doug, the raccoon wood block is from ModTots, and the vintage letter blocks are from Bob and Judi’s Coolectibles, one of my favorite antique stores in Park Slope.

Like I mentioned before, we went with Ikea’s popular
Gulliver crib. The bug mobile is from Ikea, too, along with the bulldog, whom we
call Luther. The sweet blanket was a gift from my mom; she found it at the Etsy
shop Orangeberry Baby.

One of the first decisions I made about the nursery was to include our framed print of Romare Bearden’s

"romare_bearden.jpg" "Three Folk Musicians." My husband and I bought the print at Atlanta’s High Museum when we
were dating and it’s
been in every home we’ve lived in since we were married.

"one_two_three_prints.jpg"I found the set of prints at the Etsy shop Just Bunch Designs—it
took me hours to decide which ones I wanted. The wooden frames came from
Target.

I absolutely love the painting that hangs above the
dresser/changing table. Called "The Birthday," it’s by Brooklyn-based
artist Christopher Boswell. Sam loves to stare at it during diaper changes.

The dresser (which we also use as a changing table) is the
Ikea Hemnes chest, outfitted with green storage boxes that"balloons_and_dresser.jpg"
hold diapers
and burp cloths, also from–surprise!–Ikea. We replaced the dresser knobs with some vintage ones in
different colors that I found at Bob and Judi’s Coolectibles.

"chair_1.jpg"After a long search for a suitable chair, I
finally came across the Pottery Barn glider on Craigslist. Besides an annoying squeak that has me digging through our
cleaning closet for the WD-40 at 4 a.m., it’s perfect for rocking and nursing.
The storage bin, which holds toys and books, is from Thirty-One Gifts, and the blue and white rug is a Dash & Albert. And the shelves
on the wall are Ikea Bekvam spice racks!

I’m sure I’ll be re-working this space for months (and years)
to come, but this setup has gotten us off to a good start–I love spending time
in this room with Sam.
