March is Women’s History Month, and there are plenty of events around NYC for kids and families to enjoy. From hands-on crafts and STEM activities to live performances and sports, these events highlight the important contributions women have made throughout history. It’s a great chance to learn more about and celebrate women’s achievements in a fun and engaging way this month!

Living History: Clothing of Enslaved Women and Reclaiming Black Humanity

Did you know that most women and girls from all backgrounds, including those enslaved, in 18th century New York had their clothes handmade by a tradesperson called a Mantuamaker? Join clothing historian and Mantuamaker Brooke Wellborn as she pieces, sews, and fits a reimagined 18th dress, designed by Cheyney McKnight, for this year’s Pinkster Stroll over the course of two days from beginning to end. Living Historians will speak with visitors about what clothing enslaved women were wearing, and how clothing played a role in agency in the past and present.

More than 20 organizations will lead hands-on activities designed to spark curiosity and demonstrate real-world STEM applications, particularly in aerospace and engineering. Exciting demonstrations and captivating discussions will be led by experts. An expanded college and career zone lets attendees meet role models, learn about next steps, colleges, and career pathways. Guests are encouraged to stay and explore the Museum throughout the day.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, this special performance honors the artistry, strength, and cultural legacy of women through three contrasting works drawn from Chinese and Asian dance traditions. The performance features the shimmering beauty of Peacock Dance, a work that evokes grace, renewal, and the poetic refinement of movement inspired by the natural world. It is paired with a Dai Duet from Yunnan, shaped by the fluidity and delicacy associated with the Dai people, where sculptural hands, soft phrasing, and grounded musicality suggest harmony, tenderness, and human connection. Completing the program is The Way of Fire, a dynamic and commanding portrayal of female warriors that celebrates courage, resolve, and resilience through athletic movement and rhythmic intensity.
