Ossining, NY (June 2011) – The New Rochelle Farmers Market opens for its third season of delicious locally grown food and vibrant locally based atmosphere on Friday, June 17, 2011, at the Library Green, Huguenot Street and Lawton Street, 8am-3pm.
The New Rochelle market was developed by Community Markets (CM), an organization celebrating its 20th year dedicated to making sustainable and local food available throughout the New York City area.
A new year means new events at the markets, as well as the perennial favorites. Events at the New Rochelle market may include container garden workshops, locally-sourced yarn/knitting get-togethers, and a “community table” program, which will provide local businesses with a chance to connect with shoppers in a casual, fun atmosphere. The market will also host CM’s annual beloved events, including tomato and apple tastings, corn roasts, and cider pressings.
This season, CM continues its Chef at the Market Tradition with cooking demos by local chefs. The Chefs at the Market bring customers lively seasonal cooking demos, recipe ideas, and cooking tips.
A refreshed Community Markets website will launch in mid-summer and will allow shoppers to check in to the local food scene 24/7. In addition to information, recipes, and “What’s in Season,” the website will feature seasonal recipes, farmer profiles, cooking tips, and act as an online resource center for information about the dynamic world of local food.
CM was recently recognized with the Spirit of the Community Award by Trinity Church, Ossining, NY. The group has also been awarded a grant to promote canning within Croton, Ossining, Morningside Park, Pelham, and Tarrytown. Community Markets is one of only two market organizations within New York state to receive this grant.
