With all the recent hot, humid days, air quality alerts, and chances of thunderstorms, I figured it was time to give you a few ideas for things to do with the kids indoors.
Shine from Yahoo! recently posted this neat painting idea that can be done in or outside. It’s the perfect way to get personalized art for your child’s room, especially if their name is spelled in a unique way—there are about a hundred ways to spell my name…
Ellen of Love That Max wrote about the fun and exciting experience her family had at the American Museum of Natural History sleepover. It was truly inspiring to read that Max overcame some of his fears to participate in certain events at the sleepover.
Max has never seen a movie in a theater; the darkness scares him. We stood outside as everyone filed in. The doors closed; he peeked through a crack. A minute later, he motioned me inside. We stood in the back and watched the movie for a good fifteen minutes, a breakthrough for him.
Immature parent alert: If you position your children just so beneath the Alaska Brown Bear diorama, it will look like one is about to eat them.

Another great indoor activity is to teach your child a board game like cribbage or chess. Read what happened with Rick Marin’s son Deigo learned how to play chess over at the New York Times parenting blog MotherLode.
He pestered me for games as soon as he woke up and the minute he got back from school. Before dinner, after dinner. Long after we thought he’d gone to bed, we’d find him on his bathroom floor locked in a take-no-prisoners endgame with himself.
