The weekend is here! If you’re lucky, maybe you can find ten minutes out of your undoubtedly busy day to watch this heartwarming video that swept the web this week. The Caine’s Arcade Scholarship Fund set up at cainesarcade.com has earned over $140,000 as of Friday afternoon, and it keeps ticking upwards! Congratulations to this innovative, bright, and inspirational youngster. Over at Selfish Mom,Amy writes about parents who have complained about ice cream trucks in the park, and what she thinks the proper solution is. (Hint: It isn’t blaming the ice cream truck man for your kid’s tantrum.)
“I’m sorry, but those vendors did not ruin her trip. She did, by not preparing her child for not getting what he wanted. Do all kids throw tantrums sometimes? Of course. But this mom’s reaction – we have to ban the thing that made my kid cry – speaks volumes about the sense of entitlement some parents have, and predicts how much trouble they will have down the road if they don’t deal with problems by dealing with their kids.”
See her “allowance” solution to treats at the park at “Don’t like the ice cream truck? Here’s what you can do.” Karen Le Billon, author of French Kids Eat Everything, talks at the New York Times Motherlode about the main diet of French children, and how it helps keep them healthy and expands their palates!
“Pediatrician-recommended first foods for French babies are leek soup, endive, spinach and beets (not bland rice cereal — have you ever tasted that stuff)? They teach their children that ‘good for you foods’ taste good (broccoli – yum!), whereas we often do the opposite.
“The result is a nation of healthy eaters: 6 million French children sit down every day to school lunches featuring dishes like cauliflower casserole, baked endive, beet salad and broccoli. Vending machines and fast food are banned, and flavored milk is not an option. To introduce kids to a wide variety of foods, no dish can be repeated more than once per month. Food for thought.”
