Now that the first week of school is out of the way (how did the kiddies do?), it’s time to gear up for a
fun-filled weekend. But one cannot forget about the
tenth anniversary of 9/11 (here’s a round-up of events and great reads) and of course Grandparents Day,
which oddly falls on September 11 this year too. Take advantage of these other
activities while the weather is still warm enough! —
Saturday,
September 10
215 Centre
Street
10am-5pm
The Museum of Chinese in America will host a full day
of activities commemorating the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, with storytellings,
drop-in arts and crafts activities like lantern making and moon cake making, and
cool performances from puppet shows to artist demonstrations. Admission is $10
and free for MOCA members and children 1 years old and under.
You don’t have to make a trip to the country side to
experience carnival rides, games, music, square dancing, sideshow performers, a
petting zoo and a greenmarket this weekend. Just make a stop at Riverside Park
to enjoy these festivities at the Ninth Annual West Side County Fair. Kids can
also learn about environmental issues by visiting the “Green Acre” environmental
corner. Go green!
Cory

9/11 Day of
Remembrance
All Day Saturday and Sunday
The tenth anniversary of
9/11 is here, and there are a few ways to connect to the 9/11 with your family
with events on Saturday and Sunday. From free performances by the Young People’s
chorus and The Joyce Theater Foundation to a hip read-a-thon and free admission
to The New York Botanical Garden, the weekend is filled with opportunities for
family bonding. See the full schedule here.
The New York-based rocker will give a concert at
the pop-up Museum of Motherhood, singing hit songs from his ward-winning CD
“Happily Ever Moey! A Fairy Tale Lark in Central Park.” Kids can rock out to the
rockstar’s musical version of classic fairytales and always get free gifts like
sparkly crowns and pom-pons to join the party.
