Kids love to be in motion, especially when
they are stuck in the house on a cold wintry day. Parents are always looking for new ideas to help little ones use
up some of their energy. Try this…BE A RUBBER BAND! —
It’s easy. Hold up a
rubber band for your child to see and ask him to imitate it. When you stretch
it, he stretches his whole body. If you squeeze it in your hand, he rolls over
into a ball like he’s being squeezed. If you pop it by pulling it out far and then throw it up in the air before it falls to the ground, he
does the same thing! He stretches, jumps up and then falls on the floor. It’s a
perfect way to keep him active.
What other things can your child imitate?
When I taught
kindergarten, I had the kids pretend they were a sweater that was accidentally
tossed into the dryer. They rolled around the floor like the spinning dryer and
when it stopped I pulled the sweater out of the dryer. Oh no, it
shrunk! Imagine how your kids will imitate that!
Look around the house with the kids for other things they
can imitate. Maybe they’ll try it on you. They may have YOU use your
imagination in this creative dramatics activity. Can you pop like a rubber
band?
