Top Tweets of the Week (April 23, 2012)

I don’t know about you, Tweeters, but I spent 24 hours indoors yesterday, cowering from the rain like a small child might cower from a clown. Which is not to say I’m scared of the rain, per se, rather that I hate it, and tend to avoid it at all costs. This includes canceling plans, forgoing drinking coffee because I ran out of milk, and ordering in dinner despite the fact that I live half a block away from the restaurant I happened to be in the mood for. What can I say, I’m a little dramatic when it comes to Mother Nature–but she’s kind of dramatic too, don’t you think? I mean, weather.com was predicting a “flood watch” until this morning…I know April showers bring May flowers, but that’s a bit much, no?

In any case, my point is I was suffering from some serious cabin fever this morning and was actually dying to get to the office, if only for some human contact. I don’t think I’ve ever said “dying to get to the office” on a Monday morning before, so today is a special occasion. And of course the greatest irony is that instead of human contact, I’ve spent the day staring at a computer screen…but that’s where y’all come in. So without further ado, and with sincere apologies for this ridiculously lengthy intro (I told you I had cabin fever!), let’s get down to business, which this week means: hilarity, followers, volunteering, and the impending Greatest Holiday On Earth: Mother’s Day!

I haven’t laughed so hard since…well, since Friday, when my mom sent me a really hilarious email. But the point is this is very very funny! Do you have any “taboo” words in your house? How do your kids speak around it?

I get so excited for awesome bloggers when they reach insane follower counts. We’re edging up to 800 and I’m feeling quite proud, so I can’t even imagine the feeling of 19,000 people reading your every 140-character thought…congrats, Dagmar!

Sleep is totally overrated, and “window shopping” is a way better reason to be sleep-deprived than nursing a wailing child all night. So let’s get down to business: What are you hoping to get for Mother’s Day?

This weekend was Global Youth Service Day. Did your kiddies volunteer? Were our volunteer guides useful? If you missed them on Twitter, you can find all our volunteer guides for kids in the NY Metro area here.

Speaking of volunteering, don’t let’s limit “service day” to kids, just because they celebrated a huge global version of it this past weekend. If you have some free time (clearly all moms of newborns should stop reading right now), are a professional woman writer, and live in New York, consider applying to be a GWN mentor for the 2012-13 calendar year. Girls Write Now is New York’s premier creative writing and mentoring organization for high school girls. Make a difference in someone’s life and feel really good about yourself for doing it–what’s not to love?

I was so excited to discover that National High Five Day is a real thing. I hope you all high-fived yourselves, your kids, the dog…the computer screen…your plant…can you tell I’m really into high fives?

Did you know this week is National Park Week? Tune in with Kim (who I had the pleasure of formally meeting on the #CarnivalNYC cruise ship last Friday!) at #TMOM today to raise awareness for their funding campaign and win prizes!

I feel like it’s always relevant to include a delicious recipe in a Twitter round-up. This one had the words “three layer” and “Tinker Bell” in it, so I knew I was on the right track!

What did you do for Earth Day? Was it this DIY craft? If not I feel like you should probably do it ASAP, right? I want to…

Finally, have you voted for your child’s school to win 75-100 brand new books? It literally takes 10 seconds, your kids will think you are the coolest ever, your kids’ classmates parents will think you are a magician, and (as if you needed any more incentive) it ends this week, so if you don’t vote now, you will always be left to wonder what might have been. And with that, I’ll curb the dramatics for this week. Here’s to hoping the rain doesn’t return, the May flowers start blooming a little early, we continue to be kind to one another and to the Earth, and y’all start penning your wish list for Mother’s Day ASAP. If you have any recommendations about what I should get my mom, let me know in the comments–I’d love to hear! Join us on Mondays for more Top Tweets.
