Put on
your wobble-goggles and get ready to boogie! The Disney Channel’s Imagination
Movers (known for their kid-pleasing rock) are coming to the Big Apple this
weekend. In anticipation, my
six-year-old daughter and I recently talked with Mover Scott Smith (better
known as ‘Smitty’). —
What inspired the show and how did
you all meet?
The idea
of Imagination Movers started in 2002 at Scott’s son’s birthday party and the
concept grew from there. Scott and I are friends from high school, and we met
the other guys soon after. We felt that there was a void in positive live-action
shows.
How do you write songs that are
entertaining for both kids and adults?
We play
music that we like, and then we adapt the lyrics for kids. We try to make our
music enjoyable for kids, parents and even grandparents.
What is your favorite Imagination
Movers episode?
My
favorite episode is “The Tale of Captain Kiddo.” The plot of that episode is
that we need to help Captain Kiddo learn a new pirate skill before his ship is
set to sail the next day. I really enjoyed the pirate set and the songs,
especially “The Pirate Song” and “Caribbean Rhapsody.”
What kind of music do you listen
to and what are your musical influences?
I listen
to a wide range of music—like Trombone Shorty and Galactic, which are two
really cool New Orleans Jazz Bands. I also love Rickie Lee Jones and Reggae.
I’m very influenced by music from the ’80s, current day pop music and, of
course, New Orleans jazz.
What shows did you enjoy as a kid?
I loved Sesame Street and Captain Kangaroo.
