The NYMetroParents blogroll features the best blogs in the parenting world, from New York and beyond. Here’s a closer look at why we love these mom bloggers and dad bloggers and how they’re shaping the web for parenting today.
Blogging From: New York, New York
Love That Max is a beautiful chronicle of Max, a boy with Cerebral Palsy, and his world viewed through his mother’s postings. While Max is highly intelligent, his disabilities have left him with a very limited vocabulary of just a few words. The greatest thing about Love That Max, however is the voice readers hear through stories and pictures about Max’s daily adventures.
Max’s mom Ellen manages and blogs on the site with a calm insight that is more than admirable. While some parents would become overwhelmed and reclusive when discussing their child’s disabilities, Ellen has seen the beauty in learning from her son and acts almost as an advocate not only for her family, but also for other’s out there who won’t have to go it alone.
The blog is updated quite regularly since its conception in 2008 and for loyal readers it’s been quite the journey. We’ve witnessed Max grow, add to his vocabulary, bond with his sister Sabrina, form strong opinions and constantly surprise his mother with phenomenal accomplishments. Ellen never searches for sympathy, but rather strength and solidarity in the special needs community.
This isn’t strictly a blog about Max and Co. though. Sprinkled throughout the blog are thoughtfully written and extremely relevant articles dealing with real issues that face the special needs community. Important topics include protective versus over-protective parenting, debates about stem cell research and therapy, and open dialogues about what other parents dealing with CP children are most proud of. The positivity found over at Love That Max is more than the sun shining through the clouds; it is a beacon to aspire to for all parents of kids with special needs. — Melanie Baker
