Performing arts school New York Stage of Mind, which offers musical theater classes in Long Island City, is adding a Broadway class for young kids and a musical theater summer camp to its summer offerings.
Aspiring Broadway stars can tap into their acting, singing, and dancing talents at New York Stage of Mind in Long Island City. The musical theater school is adding a Broadway for Tots program and a weekly musical camp for the summer.
Broadway for Tots is for kids ages 2-5 and is a drop-in class offered three times a week. Kids will participate in story time to learn about musicals such as The Wizard of Oz, Annie, and Matilda. They will also sing arranged versions of songs and design their own versions of costumes from these musicals.
The summer camp runs Monday-Friday and each week, kids ages 5-15 will focus on a different musical. They will rehearse the musical’s songs, dances, and some dialogue, create costumes, build the scenery, and design props. On Fridays, campers will perform the musical for their families and friends. Registration for the summer camp is now open. Camp dates are July 6-August 21 from 9am-3pm.
Owner Melanie Lemieux opened New York Stage of Mind in September 2014 in Long Island City. Lemieux studied opera performance and toured with Cirque du Soleil, Phantom of the Opera, and the USO Show Troupe. She believes that it is best to introduce kids to the performing arts when they are young. “We believe that kids learning music at a young age is a very important tool for life and for the future,” Lemieux says. “We believe that it helps them in school and helps their creativity and imagination.”
