Jewish teens of Westchester competed this year in the 2012 JCC Maccabi Games, a famous Olympic-style event that began in Memphis, moved to Houston, and ended in Rockland County.
This summer, close to 4,000 Jewish teens from across the U.S., Canada, Israel, Mexico, Great Britain, Panama, and Venezuela competed in a world-famous Olympic-style event filled with Jewish content and values: the 2012 JCC Maccabi Games.

The JCC of Mid-Westchester sent 82 athletes to compete in the Games, which began in Memphis in early August, moved to Houston, and ended in our neighboring Rockland County in mid-August.Our county’s delegation participated in boys’ and girls’ basketball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, baseball, in-line hockey, tennis, golf, table tennis, and track, earning medals in all sports.
In team sports, the boys’ U14 and U16 basketball teams won gold, boys’ U14 soccer and boys’ U16 baseball won bronze, and U16 in-line hockey won silver. Tennis players Alison Clarke and Henry Korzac, both of Scarsdale, won bronze in singles, and doubles players Max Levy and Ben Polinsky won gold. The five athletes who competed in track—Andrew Cukierwar, Michelle Domm, Phillip Goldberg, Josh Klein, and Isaac Shuchat, all of Scarsdale—all won multiple medals, and Jacob Lenchner of Scarsdale won two gold and two silver medals in golf.
Founded in 1982, the annual JCC Maccabi Games offer Jewish athletes from across the world the chance to participate in 14 sporting events, meet teens from different communities, and participate in community service projects through a JCC Cares! activity at each Games site. This year, athletes participated in a number of different community service projects that benefited the local communities, including a visit to a senior citizen center and cleaning up a local park.
