For everything from shower gifts to baby prep workshops to party services, NY Mom’s World is a wonderful resource for local mothers with questions to be answered and calendars to be filled. We chatted with Thalia Stamatelos, Chief Executive Mom to learn more about her offerings for women looking to be in-the-know when it comes to Metro Area parenting. —
1. What sparked
the idea for creating NY Mom’s
World? Was there a
particular challenge you were hoping to find help with as
a mom yourself?
I had moved to Long Island from the city, newly
married and newly pregnant, and became frustrated that I couldn’t find the
resources I needed. There were websites with directory listings of information
but none of it searchable or organized for moms. There were certainly no
workshops to attend and I just found myself thinking that if I’m experiencing
this, other moms must be also.
2. What kinds
of information and services do moms find most useful from your website and
programs? What do
you offer local moms that
other similar organizations don’t?
One of
the most unique aspects of the site is the Mom’s Back Up Brain searchable
database. It houses over 7,000 businesses and services that moms need access to
all over the NY-Metro Area. It allows mom to search for things like preschools, camps, after-school activities and
birthday party spaces. She can narrow down her short list by assigning criteria
to her search so she can find businesses that pertain to her needs. NY Mom’s
World offers weekly workshops, Things To Do, Places To Go, and a review of local
mom-centric businesses by area so that we cover the entire Metro.
3. How do you stay
on top of all the latest events and parenting
news?
NY Mom’s World’s bloggers are spread out throughout the
Metro Area and they are tasked with intimately knowing their area in terms of
what’s happening and what’s relevant for moms and parents. We then report that
information weekly through our blog and newsletter that is customized by area as
well.
4. Tell us about
the due date bags and the yum-yum
bar.
We have designed a line of
signature products for expectant moms with our Due Date Bags diaper bags &
hospital “go” bags. The Diaper Bags are the ultimate in functionality and
fashion! I have owned 12 diaper bags in my short history as a mom and with none
of them have I ever declared “I love this diaper bag!” With our line, I think
moms will be saying that and more! These bags evolve with you from first
delivery through second child, to going back to work if you choose, to having
everyone potty trained. The zip out inner liner has everything you need for you
and baby, plus drop in pouches for things like snacks, extra clothes and
cosmetics. The drop down bottom serves as the changing station and it’s kind of
a no brainer…but every pocket and pouch is labeled. It makes handing over that
diaper bag to another family member so much easier. You can then buy an
additional “working mom” liner that allows you to house your iPad, glasses
etc. Then when everyone is out of diapers, take out the liner completely and
you have yourself a stylish weekender.
The hospital
“go” bags give the whole family all the stuff the need to take to the hospital
when mom delivers. Mom’s “Labor Queen” bag has a yoga pant/cami set, nursing
bra, pads, toiletries and much more. Dad’s “Labor Coach” has his toiletries, a T
shirt and hat and there are bags for big siblings and for the baby as well.
These make great shower gifts.
With Yum Yum
Bar, we help Mom plan all those special baby & child related celebrations
either by offering a fully decked out candy & dessert bar or we can provide
complete event planning services for her.
We want to
be the one-stop shop for mom…providing resources, events and support groups to
attend, products & services. Our goal is to be a mom brand that is
recognized as a quality provider of everything new moms need.
5. You talk about
this business as having flexibility to take care of your kids. Do you still have that time/flexibility and how can other mothers achieve more of that for
themselves?
I admit my “free” time is not that available anymore
but I still do have flexibility to drive my oldest son to karate or Greek
school. I can also get a quick work-out in during the middle of the day…most
days that is. I think moms can achieve this by starting a business from
home…it does take a lot of drive and perseverance and careful planning &
organizing. But it truly is the most rewarding thing to watch something you
created out of your own vision be enjoyed by others.
