Greens Farms Academy, and independent day school in Fairfield County, recently announced the addition of a pre-K and is now accepting applications for the fallterm. The pre-K program in Westport focuses on learning through play.

Greens Farms Academy, currently a K-12 independent day school, recently announced the addition of a pre-kindergarten program in the fall of 2014. Applications for the pre-K program are currently being accepted and the application deadline is Feb. 1. The academy will accept 10 students into the program.
Head of lower school Connie Ennis says Greens Farms Academy decided to offer a pre-K program because each year the school gets applicants for kindergarten that aren’t quite ready developmentally for school. “We feel that we will be a stronger school by offering a pre-K program so that those young 5-year-olds or older 4-year-olds will have stimulating program,” Ennis says.
The pre-K curriculum will be academic in nature—covering subjects such as pre-reading and early math skills, science, art, movement, and music—but it will also include a lot of play because the academy believes that at a young age, a lot of learning occurs through active play. “The emphasis of the program is really on the joy that can come from learning,” Ennis says.
The pre-kindergartners will also be involved in the academy’s Seed to Table program. “Our students are learning a lot about growing their own food and food production,” Ennis says. “So our pre-K [students] will be very connected to that and the science, math, and art that comes from the experience of growing food.”
The academy will also offer early morning and extended day programs for the pre-K families.
