in the modern world
Thanksgiving is one of the few holidays where
gift-giving isn’t involved. It’s a great opportunity, as a parent or guardian,
to impart the ever so valuable lesson of giving thanks, when it’s not for a
material object. —
As part of our socialkidz:-)
essential workshop series, kids write notes to their parents to give thanks,
and often the first thing that comes to mind is giving thanks for “the game you
gave me” or “the cupcake you bought me.”
Take this valuable moment to share with your kids
the great pleasure of giving thanks for things that have no price tag. Lead by
example and write a note to your child. Put it on the breakfast table or on
his or her nightstand on Thanksgiving morning. Give thanks for something that
he or she does that’s special. Once your son or daughter has received the note, ask how it made
him or her feel.
After breakfast, sit down with your child and
give thanks to a few special people. Talk about the things that people do for
us each day and then go through the exercise of drawing a picture or writing a
note. Write the envelopes out with your child and put the stamp on together. Ask
if your child knows how much a stamp costs. Sending something so special is only 44 cents! What a simple and meaningful way to share the true gift of
Thanksgiving.
