We all know the drill when it comes to Mother’s and Father’s Day, but did you
know that grandparents have a day to celebrate their wonders too? Here are five quick and easy ways to get the kiddos in on surprising Grams and Gramps on their special day—which just happens to fall on Sunday, September 11
this year. —
1. Turn Old Photos Into New Memories
If there is anything grandparents love most it’s definitely sharing stories,
and what better way than through pictures? Create a portable photo album or an
accordion photo frame using everyday arts and craft supplies like construction
paper, scissors and glue. The all-about-them site, Grandparents.com, offers a variety of ways to make photo frames and albums for kids of
all ages.
2. Get Them a “Grandparents-Only” Book
There’s adult literature and children & teen lit, but we never thought
twice about digging around for Nana and Papa! Surprise them with one
of these fun reads written especially for grandparents and their grandchildren. We particularly
dig Grandparents’ Day by Nikki Tate. Energetically
illustrated, it narrates the curiously comic story of a kid who is embarrassed
to take her strange g-ma to school on this festive day.
3. Show Them Your Creative Side
Grandparents cherish small gestures (we know this to be oh-so true) and it’s
the simple thoughts that count, so print out one of these coloring sheets and get doodling! Crayola.com also has ideas for crafts that can be used
as decorative household items, like a tissue angel or decorated clothes pins.
They’ll be happy to their home décor livened up with love.
4. Have A Movie Day At Home
Pop some popcorn and lay back as you tune in to one of these top Grandparents
Day flicks.
From the classic Willy Wonka and the
Chocolate Factory to the hilarious Meet
the Robinsons, a cuddly movie date at home will be just the right pace for them.
5. Make A Lovelist
One of the simplest and sweetest ideas we’ve heard, this one is sure to be
special surprise! iMom.com suggests a list of questions for your child to answer about their grandparents, with prompts like
“what do you love most about grandma?” and “Grandpa makes me
feel special when he…” This can be delivered as a simple (love)list, an essay or can
even be turned into a poem. Have them write it on nice stationery (dotted with
a kiss or two) and it’ll be hanging from Granny’s fridge in no time!
