Editor’s Note: On An Island In The Sun

When August rolls around, there’s always a shift in the air to declare it “back-to-school” season. The ads on TV change their tune from beachside frolics to crunchy leaf piles. But it’s important to remember: It’s still summer, and there’s still plenty of fun to be had. And, best of all, New York City offers so many opportunities for urban exploration during the hazy days of August.

I like to think that the pages of this month’s magazine are infused with sunshine to keep you in the summer spirit clear through Labor Day. First of all: We shot our cover with “The Daily Show’s” fantastic Desi Lydic on that freakishly hot day at the end of May that had the whole city scrambling to install their air conditioners and whip out their summer clothes after a chilly spring. And Lydic herself (and her adorable son Brixton) is probably one of the funniest and sunniest people I’ve ever worked with. Don’t miss our look into her life as a new mom and political comedian.

We’re also savoring summer’s best flavors with a delicious end-of-summer recipe roundup from Daphne Oz (yes, she’s currently pregnant with her third child, and yes, she’s still winning the cooking and entertaining game). Prepare to plan the ultimate LDW menu.

And finally, in this issue, though we’re giving in a little bit to the pull towards preparing for autumn, we want you to feel like summer is still yours for the taking—whether you have one last vacation planned (see our field guide to family road trips) or are simply soaking up the rays on your own personal island in the sun: Manhattan, of course!

Enjoy August (and don’t forget to wear sunscreen)!
