When you’re a new mom, hair care can be a challenge to say the least. First, the crazy hormone fluctuations following birth often make your hair fall out (as if having a newborn isn’t unglamorous enough!). Then you spend all your time chasing after your little one, leaving little time to care for your hair.—
As a result, lots of women (yours truly included) opt for the “mom haircut”–kinda like a choppy bob. I like it because I can wash it and run out the door with still-wet hair!
But no matter what hair style you have, there are some products that can help boost up limp, balding, lackluster “mommy hair.” Here are some I really like:
A thickening shampoo and conditioner. My fab stylist at Parlor in Brooklyn (if you go there ask for Katja–she is amazing!) turned me on to Aveda’s new line for thinning hair, Invati Exfoliating Shampoo and Invati Thickening Conditioner. At first, I wasn’t sure it was what I needed–I was no longer losing my hair per se–but as my stylist explained, the products help add volume, which I am always on the quest for. I have been using both for the past month and can already see a difference; my hair seems bigger, bouncier and shinier. I alternate these thickening products with Aveda’s Shampure line, which is also great and has a smell I adore.
A leave-in conditioner/hair turban combo. After showering, I like to add more moisture to my over-processed, frizzle-frazzled hair and have recently been really into Carol’s Daughter Tui Moisturizing Leave-In Conditioner. It’s almost like a dry oil spray you spray into damp hair–it does not weigh fine hair down but instead adds bounce and shine. Then, if I have time in the morning, I throw my hair up into a hair turban, which lets the conditioner sink in while your hair dries as you get dressed, unload the dishwasher, etc. These are both great, time-saving products for busy moms!
Moisturizing and styling oil. Another “styling product”–if you can even call it that, as I don’t really style my hair save for combing it–that I use and recommend is . It smells absolutely lovely and adds a bit more moisture to parched hair. I add a dime-sized drop to my damp hair and use it to smooth my hair and make it look pretty and presentable!
A hair mask. A hair mask adds moisture to over-processed, dry hair by deeply conditioning it and helping to smooth texture and frizz. One brand I have been using recently is Carol’s Daughter Tui Moisturizing Hair Smoothie. I use this about once a month in the tub and it leaves my hair soft and smelling like a tropical garden!
