On Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, Anya’s Art Room will kick off its new winter session at its home studio in South Riverdale, Bronx. The semester will end on April 16, 2019. Classes for kids ages 7 and 8 will take place from 3:30pm-4:30pm on Mondays and classes for kids ages 8-12 will take place from 5pm-6pm on Mondays and from 5pm-6pm on Tuesdays. All art materials will be provided.
At Anya’s Art Room, kids ages 5 and up engage in a variety of art methods, including sculpture, painting, sketching, jewelry making, and model drawing. A graduate of Parsons School of Design, Owner and Instructor Anya Marfin is currently a teaching artist at Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan. She possesses over 10 years of experience in the design and art industries.
Classes at Anya’s Art Room are modeled after the fine arts courses one may take in art school. Instead of teaching in a step-by-step style, Anya reinforces the importance of developing one’s unique process and perspective: “I teach the kids to look at the object and to understand the changing light, how their eyes are seeing it, and how to transfer that to the paper,” she explains.
Students look to the masters not just for inspiration, but with a critical eye. In examining the works of Van Gogh, they ask themselves: how did he do it? What they discover in turn informs their own projects. By using a variety of mediums, such as acrylic paint, watercolors, pencil, air dry clay and charcoal, Anya also allows students to explore different styles and find their strengths.
As she says, “Expressing yourself with different materials is an amazing gift.”
Parents interested in enrolling their kids in Anya’s Art Room’s upcoming session may email or call Anya directly. Students may enroll at any point throughout the semester or attend individual courses on a drop-in basis. Each class is an hour long.
