A Q&A With Kumon

At Kumon, students from preschool to
high school can wax and wane their reading and math skills from every angle
until success beams bright. And with plenty of centers from Gramercy Park to
Harlem (and many venues in between),
you’ll have no trouble finding the one that fits your family best. And what better way to check out their programming than with their
Literacy Open House, taking place this Saturday,
March 3 from
10am-2pm at all participating locations.
Activities include games, readings with award-winning authors, prizes and
refreshments.

What is
the Kumon philosophy?

We believe all
children can maximize their potential by practicing the Kumon Method of
Learning. More than four million children in 47 countries are gaining confidence
and strong study habits through our method. Kumon gives students of all ages and
abilities the chance to build the skills necessary for a richer, more successful
educational experience.

Who will
best succeed in a Kumon center?

Kumon’s
individualized approach enables anyone to succeed, regardless of age or
ability. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up, or
is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or
her achieve success.

You are not
a tutoring-based learning center. How does your approach
differ?

Kumon’s
time-tested method allows us to tailor lesson plans to the unique needs of our
students, which fosters independent learning and an innate desire in our
students to achieve more on their own. Our methodology for learning transforms
the lives of our students. It’s a transformation that children will carry with
them beyond the classroom. Our focus is not simply on getting a better grade on
the next exam: it’s on the value of independent learning.

Tell me a
little bit about how you help early learners succeed.

Kumon helps preschool and
kindergarten students build the fundamental skills necessary for continued
success. Young children are provided with the attention, positive reinforcement
and instruction needed for early childhood development. Early learners are
introduced to the basic skills required to learn math and reading while
developing a love of learning.
