40 East 66th

A unique renovation has turned a historic building—designed by architect Rosario Candela, famous for his apartment building designs in the early 20th century—into a luxurious condominium with 36 spacious apartments ideal for families. Located on Madison Avenue’s “Golden Mile,” 40 East 66th was originally constructed in 1929, and painstaking care has been taken to maintain its pre-war ambience.
“There is nothing that has not been custom-designed— everything from the moldings to the mantles to the doors,” says Iva Spitzer, executive vice president of Corcoran Sunshine Marketing Group and head of sales and marketing for the property. “We combined the very best of the old and the new.”

Vornado Realty Trust, the developers of the property, maintained the building’s original layout. As a result, there are just three apartments per each of the 12 floors, giving the building a distinct boutique-like feel. Each apartment boasts approximately 2,500 square feet of space, three bedrooms, and depending on the layout, up to four and half bathrooms. “The profile of the building is for families,” says Spitzer. There are also three floor plans available so that buyers can choose the layout that works best for them. “The C-line has a much larger kitchen with an eat-in area that would be great for young families,” points out Spitzer.

When it comes to design, the apartments feature modern conveniences combined with hand-crafted beauty. Examples include kitchens with Viking stoves and Cote d’Or limestone floors, and bathrooms which offer heated, basket-weave marble floors and Zuma & Kohler Tea-for- Two bathtubs.

The building itself boasts a beautifully designed playroom, a fitness room, bike and stroller storage, and a washer and dryer in each residence. Residents will enjoy living in a neighborhood that has long been a haven for families: this sliver of the Upper East Side is home to a wide range of public, private, and parochial schools, and is located just steps from the city’s biggest playground, Central Park.
