Weekend Planner April 30-May 1

So many festivals, too little time. The sun is supposed to
be out for the next days (read: no rain!) which means that you’ll be able to be
out and about with the whole brood. And trust us; the city is brimming with possibilities—from
cherry blossoms to children’s opera to rock and roll. —

On both
Saturday and Sunday, come to the
Brooklyn Botanic Garden to celebrate the culmination of
Hanami, the Japanese cherry blossom season.
The
traditional Sakura
Matsuri Festival
will be taking place, including over 60 events and live
performances—like a taiko drumming demonstration.

Take your pick of two family-friendly events on Saturday, courtesy of the
Tribeca Family Film Fest. Catch ESPN
Sports Day
, featuring New York athletes, mascots and personalities (and BMX
bikers) or mosey on over to the Family
Street Fair
for face painting, delectable treats and some live Broadway
snippets.

Mini rockers will enjoy watching the funky organ/drum duo, Sugar
Free Allstars
perform soul, gospel
and rock music at Symphony Space. Still jonsing for more music? There is also
Kindiefest on Sunday—even parents will love the ecletic line-up.

Boogie down for a good cause on
Sunday.
The Michael J. Fox Foundation
for Parkinson’s Research is hosting a
family dance party at Pacha
in Midtown. 100% of all proceeds will benefit
the fight for a cure. Tickets include dancing, kids’ activities and
refreshments from The French Culinary Institute.

In the
mood for theater? Catch the musical adaption of Wendi Kaufman’s “Helen
on 86th Street”
. Tweens will dig the show’s relatable protagonist. Or delight in the Czech
Center’s production of Brundibar,
a children’s opera first staged in 1938—rarely exhibited for audience…a
must-see!
