"Penguins" IMAX exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History

Finally, the rain has abetted and we’re even getting a bit of breeze. This weekend, we have family picnics in mind, for a little bit of nature, lots of space to run around, and much-needed peace. Sound good? Check out these 11 great picnic spots we’ve scoped out, with options from every borough. Or if you’re looking for something a little more active, check out these inspired mini golf courses to enjoy around the city with endless fascinating features, from waterfalls to art installations.

Otherwise, the next few days bring mad fun like the MLB All-Star Fanfest at the Javits Center, the Come Out & Play Festival on Governors Island, a literally very cool “Penguins” IMAX film at AMNH, and much more. Enjoy!

 

STARTING FRIDAY

Hit a home run, meet former All-Star John Franco, trade cards, play video games, and much more at the MLB All-Star Fanfest Kids Day at the Javits Center on Friday. If you don’t make it out, many general interest attractions will be on offer on Saturday, not to mention the family clinics and games at Sunday’s Family Day. Batter up! (Friday-Sunday)

It’s a “plunderful life” at Hudson River Park, where a screening of the British animated adventure “The Pirates! Band of Misfits” will have the family roaring. Arrr you ready? (Friday)

TADA! Youth Theater’s new “Sleepover” production includes the whole package: pajamas and pillows, slippers and snacks, plus boys who plan to crash the party. No sleep tonight! (Friday & Saturday)

Cool down at the American Museum of Natural History, where a new “Penguins” IMAX film follows the journey of a young King Penguin helping his offspring survive the winter. Buckle up! (Friday-Sunday)

Another pirate adventure: “Swiss Family Robinson” is navigating a foreign island at the Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre, part of the NY Musical Theatre Festival. Dive in! (Friday-Sunday)

 

STARTING SATURDAY

Come Out & Play Day on Governors Island means an afternoon of funky outdoor competitions like a real-life battleship war with cardboard vessels and water balloons. Get moving! (Saturday)

Learn the basic moves of swing, salsa, tango, and merengue at the kiddie version of Midsummer Night Swing in Lincoln Center Plaza’s Damrosch Park. Care to dance? (Saturday)

Super news for all space-lovers: The Space Shuttle Pavilion at the Intrepid Museum has finally reopened–with a few new features. Here’s the starry scoop. (Saturday)

Bring everyone to Brooklyn Bridge Park for a parent-approved Hip-Hop Fest, featuring three hours of music, workshops, and activities designed for the younger set. Rock on. (Saturday)

The only thing better than the Hester Street Fair is the fair’s Family Day, with crafts, movement, and live performances for kids in the midst of all the shopping. Woot! (Saturday)

Calling all Francophiles: Bastille Day celebrates all things French with treats like crepes and eclairs, live music, crafts, and more along East 60th Street. Tres bien! (Sunday)

Grab some binoculars and a flashlight, because it’s time to explore the hidden spaces in a kind of creepy scavenger hunt at the historic Museum at Eldridge Street. Be brave! (Sunday)

Rumpelstiltskin gets a musical twist at the 13th Street Repertory Company in an hour-long show–perfect for introducing youngsters 5 and up to theater. It’s a classic. (Sunday)
