Apps For Major NYC Attractions

Some of the most popular attractions in the city now have really great apps to enhance your visit. Here are a bunch we especially like, but keep in mind that so many other places on our big list have them, as well.

Bronx Zoo Explorer ($.99): This app provides users with an interactive map and a hassle-free way to navigate the animal kingdom. Select the GPS button and pinpoint your exact location, or just start walking and monitor your movement within the map. Looking for the lions, tigers, or bears? You can search for particular buildings, exhibits, and animals or find a place to eat within the zoo. Available for iPhone

Central Park App (free): It’s easy to get lost and overwhelmed in an area that spans 778 acres. Fortunately, this nifty guide gives parents the ability to search sites within the green oasis (think arches and bridges, fountains and monuments) and provides alerts to fun goings on for families. Available for iPhone & Android

Chinatown Chow Down (free): There are way too many options for where to eat in Chinatown (more than 115!), so this app helps food-minded families decide where to go based on prices, categories, and insider tips. Who’s in the mood for dim sum? Available for iPhone

Dave & Buster’s App (free): Get ahead of the game by charging up your child’s power card before you even walk inside this game mecca! And if you’re wondering how many chips are left on the card or how many tickets your little one has racked up so far, you can check those tallies with a finger swipe. Available for iPhone & Android

Farm Fresh NYC ($2.99): This app is any eco-minded family’s guide to locally harvested fruits, veggies, fish, and more. There’s information for the more than 50 farmers’ markets across NYC, all of which the app will direct you to through Google Maps. Not sure what you should be buying right now? The app also tells you what’s in season. Available for iPhone

Governors Island Explorer’s Guide ($1.99): This is the first and only app that provides visitors with an interactive map, the island’s history, and breathtaking photos. It also features landmark locations and—the best part—bathroom sites (because the kids are going to have to go at some point, right?). Available for iPhone

MSG Insider (free): Rock on! Get the scoop on concerts and performances at venues including: MSG, Radio City Music Hall, Beacon Theatre, and the Theater at MSG. Interactive maps can also help guide your group through transportation and restaurant options as needed. Available for iPhone

NYBG in Bloom (free): Useful either when you’re at the garden with children or if you simply want to explore the natural beauty from your couch, the app includes ideas for walking tours, an interactive map, special exhibition highlights, photos, and even audio commentary. Available for iPhone

Top of the Rock App (free): The virtual viewfinder, audio tour, snapshot feature, and eating and shopping navigator makes this app an ideal, personal tour guide for your visit to one of the most iconic spots in Manhattan. Available for iPhone & Android
