  • Yuken Teruya: Cutting Trees

Sugar Hill Children's Museum of Art & Storytelling
898 St Nicholas Ave, New York, NY 10032, USA

    Daily, through March 31

    All day

New York-based artist Yuken Teruya transforms discarded newspapers, fast food packages, and commercial shopping bags into intricate vignettes and lush foliage. In Cutting Trees, the artist will present intricate dioramas based on the image of an existing tree by meticulously cutting out and folding individual paper bags. Teruya’s work validates his respect for material, craft, and the environment. His use of paper is an act of returning discarded timber back to the setting of a quiet land, reminding viewers of the fragility of our ecosystem and encouraging them to consider the wondrous nature of the commonplace.

Yuken Teruya’s Cutting Trees will be on view from October 17, 2018 through March 31, 2019. This exhibition will be accompanied by a series of storytelling events, activities and programs that explore the beauty in every day materials, reverence for the environment and opportunities for our youngest visitors to use scissors.
