Weekend Planner September 16-18

Looking for a way to treat your children after a successful
first couple weeks of school? Well, there certainly isn’t a shortage of
kid-friendly events in New York City
to choose from this weekend! Discount theater tickets, festivals and county
fairs top our list of fun-filled adventures for the whole crew. —

In its last weekend, Off-Broadway’s “20at20” discount allows you to purchase tickets to a performance for $20 just 20
minutes before the start of a show. This special offer is good for beloved
kid-centric shows like The Gazillion Bubble Show and Pinkalicious the Musical. See you there!

To open your little one’s imagination, make your way over to
the New York Hall of Science for the Second Annual Maker Faire
on Saturday. Thousands of new inventions and crafts from pro and amateur
inventors will be on display in categories ranging from robotics, textile arts
and crafts, electronics and puppets. Have a little creator of your own? Take
him to the Fashion District Kite Flight on top of the Port Authority Bus
Terminal. At this FREE event, youngsters will get to make and fly their own
kites while enjoying music, food and other craft projects.

Though the kids are back in school and the weather is
cooling, summer is not officially over until next weekend. Enjoy a carnival one
last time at Queens County Fair at the Queens County
Farm Museum.
Food, hayrides, fair rides, livestock, arts & crafts and a pie eating
contest await you and yours at the 29th annual festival.

Got a craving for Chinese food? Bring the family down to the
3rd Annual Tang’s Natural New York City Dumpling Festival on Saturday for both traditional and more modern favorites. The festival
features delicious and unique cuisine from Malaysia
to China to Poland. Yum!

Readers young and old alike can find countless activities to
enjoy at the Brooklyn Book Festival this Sunday at Brooklyn Borough Hall, Columbus
Park, St Ann’s
Church and the Brooklyn Historical Society. The FREE event includes lectures
and panels from some of the industry’s most-respected authors, as well as a
“youth stoop” featuring discussions and activities for tweens and teens.

Take your budding artist to the 92nd Street Y on
Sunday for the Children’s Warhol Festival,
where little ones can learn about Warhol’s unique art through a couple of
workshops. In the Rubber Stamp Session, kids ages 5-8 will learn that Warhol
first used his technique of repetition with rubber stamps as a commercial
artist. For the 9- to 12-year-old crowd, the Go Fish! workshop in the Jewelry
and Metalwork Studio allows participants to design and cut a metal bookmark
that imitates Warhol’s iconic fish print.

On Sunday, watch the beloved children’s book, Stone Soup,
come to life on stage by the Literally Alive Children’s Theatre. The book,
written by Michael Sgouros and Brenda Bell, is about two lost soldiers from the
Revolutionary War era who wander into a village whose residents are unwilling
to share their supply of food, until the soldiers begin preparing Stone Soup.
Prior to the performance, the theater will host a one-hour interactive workshop
where they will discuss how they adapted the book into a musical. Also, bring a
few canned goods along to donate to a local soup kitchen. Even better? New York Family readers can receive a 20-percent discount by entering the code: NYFAMILY when purchasing tickets.
