Once confined to the domain of Long Island and New Jersey prep schools, lacrosse has slowly infiltrated the New York City sports culture. Fantastic for developing coordination, balance, conditioning, and discipline, it’s a great way for kids to get out and burn some calories while having fun. Below you’ll find a couple of New York’s more prominent youth programs:
Lacrosse at Yorkville Youth Athletic Association
Offering an introductory program focused on fundamentals like throwing, catching, capturing ground balls, and shooting, this program is geared for both boys and girls, grades 2 through 6. Featuring former standout Division I athletes as instructors, this is a terrific way to get your little ones off on the right foot. The YYAA offers year-round programs both indoors and out; the spring program runs from April 6 thru June 15 at Heckscher Field in Central Park. Registration is still open and spots remain–but not for long. For more information, visit their website.
Doc’s NYC Lacrosse
Established in 1986 in the name of Bernard “Doc” Schoenbaum (a lifelong lacrosse player, coach, and enthusiast–and dentist by trade) Doc’s NYC Lacrosse offers competitive leagues for boys and girls of all ages and skill levels. While registration has already filled for the spring season, parents can still apply through the website to be placed on the waiting list; in the event that pre-registered participants withdraw, openings will be filled in order on the list.
