It’s birthday time! So to note the day I’m not so fond of celebrating, I’ve decided to write a little poem — inspired by the great Shel Silverstein, whose work I’ve been reading aloud forever.
I WILL NOT MOP THE FLOOR TODAY
I will not mop the floor today.
I shall not spray the sink.
My birthday comes but once a year,
You all should stop and think.
The cooking and the cleaning,
The homework checks, et all –
Can all be done by you today,
So please don’t slip and fall.
My faith in you grows stronger
When you do things on your own.
Think of today as challenging –
A sail that must be blown.
I’ll take this rare occasion
To do those things I rarely do:
I’ll watch hours of The Housewives,
I’ll have a donut, or a few.
I will not mop the floor today,
So be careful where you pee.
I love being wife and mother,
But today is meant for me.
